Dallas/Ft. Worth Community Stands Up For Haiti

In 2009 I found myself loving my city in ways I didn't think possible. There are so many great people here who are reaching out to meet each other and do great things. 2010 is starting out the same way. Due to the tragic circumstances in Haiti a group of us have pledged to assist with events and fundraisers to keep awareness in the forefront about the needs of the people there. Today its being kicked off with a donation drive in Arlington today that is being spearheaded by SpotLight's Urban Magazine and my twitter friend Tanijoy. Other upcoming events can be found on my blog and the facebook page Love To Haiti.
100% of all donations will be given to Yele.org which is headed by Haitian native son Wyclef Jean.

Today: Arlington Haiti Donation Drive
SpotLight's Urban Magazine will have a Clothing Drive for Haiti TODAY from 12 to 4pm at 2215 S. Cooper Street at the Party City parking lot on the corner of Cooper and Pioneer in Arlington, TX

01.18 Power To The People @ Kush
01.23 IConscious Poetry Open MIC and Showcase @ Texas Caribbean Foods
01.29 Hip Hop For Haiti @ House of Blues
02.05 Happy Hour 4 Haiti @ Zubar sponsored by the Brown Sugar Collective

Organizations collaborating on events are V's Vibe Spot, People's Lunch Counter, The Marcus Graham Project, The Foundation, 26Ark and a host of others.

The Marcus Graham Project Featured on AdAge.com

I had the unique pleasure of being around Lincoln when he started formulating his vision for The Marcus Graham Project and now I'm so proud of him and everyone involved. This organization is needed in every community in America and I hope that the exposure on AdAge.com increases national awareness of MGP's vision and goals for young men.

11/11/09
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- How is Eddie Murphy playing a role in a new push to diversify ad agencies? Former agency account exec Lincoln Stephens is both an example and an evangelist of the "Boomerang" effect. A year ago Stephens abruptly quit his Chicago agency job, moved back to his hometown of Dallas and, on a shoestring budget, launched a program to recruit, train and motivate talented young African Americans for advertising agency jobs. Execs at The Richards Group, Imaginuity, Tracy Locke and other Dallas organizations volunteered to mentor participants in his first boot camp sessions.

"The Naughty Chef" a Dallas reality star is born.

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Dallas' new reality TV show star Blythe Beck. I was excited about this event because I had already started seeing the promo spots on Oxygen. Chef Beck dressed in a pink chef's smock & pink glittery tennis shoes is a sparkling personality who greeted the guests with enthusiasm and grace. She is so vibrant and easy going and I can't wait to see the show. This event was hosted by Imperial Beverage Group which is owned by Schenell Blanton which is the only black and female owned beverage company in the country. It was a beautiful event that had a great turnout. The food prepared by Chef Beck was delicious. The items on the menu were Lambsicles that melted in mouth like butter and drizzled with pesto, smoked bbq ribs and the crowd favorite spicy seafood deviled eggs. In addition to all the great food was the poured up by our gracious hosts that consisted of the Stinger & Arabella (Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel & Sauvignon Blanc). My invite to this event came from my neighbor and friend qho is a hoot and a holler to hang out with Gary Hayes who is a member of the 97.9's Rickey Smiley Show.

Erykah Badu's Born Day @ Prophet Bar

Last night was another great night of music a the Prophet Bar. This Wednesday night just keeps getting hotter. R.C. the promoter and musical director for the Jam Sessions that held their weekly posted on Facebook that Erykah would be coming by last night. So me being the pessimist that I am acted like I didn't care. Well, after a couple of phone calls from friends headed down to Deep Ellum I shook off the funky disposition and went in search of the funk. I arrived and the place was packed. The singers and poets that participated in the open mic segment of the night were pretty darn good. The band was CRAZY! Those guys can play the hell out of anything and Claudia, girl you know you are a star. The best part of the night was seeing all my Facebook and twitter homies, it was like a reunion. I talked to Brook who is getting ready to launch a new hip hop site and my girl Eboni who is a stylist who has just had an amazing shoot with ANTM alumni Jade. I saw the pictures and Eboni gave Jade the bizness. DMoe who sings background for soulstar Eric Roberson was in the house looking all Detroit fly. He's in town writing and recording his new project. Back to EB

R.C. is such a gentleman, to bring out Erykah he had all the women get a free glass of champagn to toast her birthday. Erykah hit the stage and we sang the "happy birthday" song to her. She looked amazing in a red jacket and her down to her butt braids are back. She launched into the song "Me" and a 15 min. set that was priceless. It was such a blessing to see her out like that, she is definitely Dallas' own because she owned us last night. Thanks Erykah for sharing the start of your birthday with us, we appreciate ya. Houston where ya at, she's performing and hosting a after party in H-town next Friday. Visit www.713black.com for more details.
