The Echelon presents PJ Morton "Walk Alone" 03.12

PJ Morton makes a stop in Dallas to personally host a listening session for his upcoming release "Walk Alone" at the AM/PM Lounge Friday, March 12 from 8pm-10pm.

PJ Morton, a native of New Orleans, LA, most often describes his music as “feel good music that lyrically tells stories about life and love…music that makes your heart think. He coins his style of music, ‘soulful pop’.” This 27-year old musical prodigy is indubitably a “true” seasoned musician who has garnered a reputation for writing and producing warm, heart-felt, and infectious songs that engage the heart. His humble, yet aggressive spirit, along with his prolific musical talents has afforded him with many opportunities to “fall” comfortably into the music industry.
With PJ's background in music, it is no wonder that he has found himself right at home in the music business. Coming from a musical background, PJ got his start singing in the church. He began to play the piano at the age of eight years old and by the age of 14; he was already writing and producing. His dream of becoming an artist began to take shape while he was in high school.

PJ's hard work and dedication to his craft is gaining him national and international notoriety in the music industry. PJ is a Grammy-award winning writer and producer who can be cited for writing and producing for a wide array of artists. His creative prowess allows him to cross all genres of music. He has worked with a range of noteworthy artists from India.Arie to gospel superstar Fred Hammond. He recently teamed up with super producer Jermaine Dupri to co-write for such platinum artists as Jagged Edge, Monica, Heather Headley and LL Cool J. PJ recently won the 2008 Stellar Awards, "Song of the Year" Award.

Having influences that range from Stevie Wonder to James Taylor, PJ reminisces on his childhood. “When I was younger, my mother would put on the Beatles and explain the songs … it made me focus on the writers. I’ve never been drawn to one style of music; it’s always been about the songwriters. That’s why Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Sting and James Taylor touched me so … because of the songs.”

Because of the uniqueness of PJ’s music, one cannot place him in one specific category. He says it best by stating, “Whatever genre you can stick Stevie Wonder or Sting in ….I’ll take that!” He has the necessary ingredients it takes to break new ground….to be a trailblazer! Without so much as a second thought, he will raise the bar in the industry! If one had to use one word to describe him, it would be FREE, because he does not worry about much. In his own words, PJ sums it up, “I just keep moving, because I know that it’s not my fight anyway. So, I just do what I do and let God do the rest!!!”

"The Unseen Mechanism" is Chucky Sly

photo-Marcus Willis

"The Unseen Mechanism"
This past Final Friday at the Liquid Lounge the man that is most wanted when it comes to Dallas collaborations dropped HIS solo debute Chucky Sly "The Unseen Mechanism". This title is so appropriate because Chucky has been unseen in the making of the Dallas Hip Hop scene. He has lent his rap skills and singing voice to many and is the go to guy to bring the island flavor to a project. The new project is a great representation of who he is a artist and the producers he's worked with have done a fantastic job in creating the framework. Don't take my word for it hit the link below and take a listen to the album. I've included the the tracklisting of the men/women who put in work on what I think will be the Dallas Hip Hop album to have from 2009.

I almost forgot: Chuck's performance was epic, he came dressed to impress so I had to kid him and tell him he "wasn't hip hop". He performed like a man on a mission and the Final Friday crowd game him as much love has he's given to the scene. In the house to celebrate the album release were Shabazz 3, DJ Jay*Clipp(True School, Mo Brown (Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights), R.C.(E. Badu music director & Jam Sessions @ Prophet Bar), Pikahsso, Vincent Tucker, Peoples Lunch Counter(Seidah, Rage & Satori), HeadKrack(The Rickey Smiley Show)& the Ra'Koo family. Big thank you to the Aziatik Teem family for holding down the Dallas Hip Hop scene for the past 10 years with the Final Friday event.

N'dambi "Pink Elephant" Music NEWS!

The BUZZ has begun on this highly anticipated release. After Ledisi & Eric Roberson killed the R&B iTunes charts I can only help my Dallas homegirl do the same. I took this info off the Concord website so please read on & share with other music lovers.

N'dambi "Pink Elephant" In Stores Oct. 6
Every so often, a musical soul emerges from the underground with the inescapable talent; artistry and charisma that marks the arrival a gathering storm. Pink Elephant is the Stax Records debut from N'dambi, a songwriter with emotional purpose and rare honesty. The striking vocalist, pianist and composer from Dallas, Texas, known for her signature afro and fiery style, possesses the intuitive perception and powerful creativity that ensures an essential contribution to modern R&B and soul.

N'dambi's storytelling skills are in peak form on Pink Elephant with tunes like the Rod Temperton influenced, ‘80s hip-hop flavored "Nobody Jones," the story of a girl with big dreams who won't let her humble beginnings stop her, and the delicious saga "L.I.E.," a tale of a man living a double life along New York's Long Island Expressway. Delusions of love spring up in the old school love-gone-wrong melodic funk of "Daisy Chain"; "Ooo Baby" is the smooth-grooving tale of reconnection with a former lover; while the blues-inflected "Imitator" finds a young woman suffering over the collapse of her lover's promises. "You're not the man I used to know, you're an imitator," she sings on this mid-tempo urban gem. The hope of true love cries out in "The One," a disarming, jazz-tinged ballad kissed with a touch of classic Stax. The album's lead single, "Can't Hardly Wait," is a biting chunk of scorching sarcasm delivered in the commanding singer's rich tone. Her opening complaint, "I don't know why I keep f***in' wit you," perfectly expresses the inability to turn a listless love loose.

Pink Elephant was recorded in Santa Monica, California, with producer Leon Sylvers III, whose credits include Shalamar, Gladys Night, The Whispers, Blackstreet, Lakeside and many more. N'dambi insisted the record have a modern sheen yet adhere to the sturdy influence of classic R&B and soul artists like Slave, Heatwave, Michael Jackson, Betty Davis, Isaac Hayes, Smokey Robinson, and The Sylvers. That led her to The Sylvers' famous producer, big brother, Leon.

Blessed with a deep contralto, she became especially enamored with male singers from the ‘70s and ‘80s. The funky soul of the Bar-Kays' Larry Dodson, the sophisticated syncopation of Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White and the notorious abandon of the Ohio Players' Sugafoot influenced her heavily. Later, the mysterious, uninhibited imagination of Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson also became musical and cultural touchstones. N'dambi sang back-up and collaborated with fellow soul seeker Erykah Badu, all the while honing her artistry and slowly building a fiercely loyal fan base that resonates with the organic, authentic approach to her life and music.

On Pink Elephant, N'dambi ingeniously distills soul-deep inspiration into a sensual style of elegance and power, making her a fundamental new addition to the Stax legacy.

Bavu Blakes new single "On The Cool"

Featured on Suite903 Soul:
According to his press kit, Erykah Badu baby-daddy #2 The D.O.C. once called Bavu, “one of Texas’ brightest stars.” Texas is enormous. It also has a lot of stars. To his credit, Bavu is a far cry from any of the ones on 106 & Park, but his “On The Cool” is just as danceable, and maybe more importantly, specifically about “taking off your cool” to dance. Bavu’s Too Selfish is available in stores now.

From V's Vibe Spot:
If I'm not mistaken Bavu collaborated with Dallas' up & coming producer Picnic and songtress S'ence. Bavu debuted this single in Dallas a few weeks ago at the Prophet Bar's MJ Tribute backed by RC and The Gritz with Picnic and S'ence on stage to give us the full effect. Great song and direction for Bavu for his next album "Too Selfish".
